Following their intervention, the renovation work resumed and was subsequently completed.

The LHAAT in Yauri Local Government Area, Kebbi State, run by the NANA Girls and Women Empowerment Initiative, covers ten primary health centres: Gumbi, Jijima, Zamare, Rukubalo, Illela, UK, Unguwar Malamai, Town PHC, MCH Yauri and Tondi. At its monthly meeting, attended by the LGA’s head of health staff, members report facility by facility on what they found, what they raised and what has changed.

What changed between June and August 2026

At Town PHC, repair work was carried out on the windows after members made an advocacy call to the head of the facility. At Illela PHC, damage to the building caused by a fallen shea tree was repaired using funds generated by the facility, after the team engaged the officer in charge. At Tondi PHC, members found a renovation that had stopped; they contacted the Director of Health, the work resumed and was completed. At MCH Yauri, members asked management to clear the overgrown weeds around the premises, and action was taken immediately.

Across all ten facilities, members report that managers have used facility-generated funds to buy blood pressure apparatus, thermometers, drugs and maintenance materials, and to pay volunteers, cleaners and security staff.

Checking back

On 18 September a monitoring team led by Musa Gana returned to MCH Yauri. The grounds were clean and the overgrown vegetation gone. The head of the facility, Amina Muhammad, reaffirmed management’s commitment to keeping it that way. The facility runs with about 25 regular staff and 34 volunteers; 14 staff were on duty when the team arrived at 11 a.m.

What still needs attention

The shortage of delivery beds is the biggest concern: in some facilities two women can need the delivery room at the same time with only one bed between them. Shortages of cleaners and security personnel were also reported. These are now on the agenda for the team’s next visits to the LGA Chairman and to UK, Illela and Unguwar Malamai PHCs.
