A joint advocacy visit to the Health Secretariat of Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, took place on 27 August 2026. The delegation brought together the Chairman of the Kaduna Maternal Accountability Mechanism (KADMAM), Alh. Garba Muhammed; LHAAT member Usman Mustapha; IIGES member Maryam Mustapha Jumare; members of the advocacy team; and the Kaduna State LGA Coordinator of SCAPP.
Reviewing the scorecard
The team presented and reviewed the Zaria LGA health scorecard, looking in particular at antenatal care, immunisation and other priority services, and identified where the LGA’s performance needs to improve. The KADMAM Chairman urged the Secretariat to put practical, sustainable measures in place and recommended joint meetings with ward development committees as a platform for sharing health information with communities, including timely information on immunisation, malaria prevention and drug availability.
The advocacy team also raised facility-level challenges seen across the LGA’s PHCs: insufficient delivery beds, inadequate space for expansion, poor lighting, and the continued practice of home delivery among some pregnant women.
The Secretariat’s response
The Health Secretariat acknowledged the concerns, said it was already aware of several of them and that measures had been initiated on security and the renovation of some facilities. It committed to convene the relevant focal persons to address late submission of reports after validation, and expressed its readiness to work with ward development committees and related teams across Zaria LGA to identify and address challenges together.
